THAT said, it does strike me as a little strange that the vast majority of the install seemed to go just fine. So it's not like any major devices aren't basically working.

Perhaps there's a physical problem with one or both HDs? They're both 'used', and it's possible they could have been physically damaged although there were no known problems with them that I know of when they were last used as external USB backup drives.

But then if one or both are physically damaged, would there have been a complaint about them when they were reformatted at the very start of the installation? Or perhaps there is no HD integrity checking as part of the install? I don't believe it it. I'm using Nero, and annoyingly it wouldn't let me burn at anything less than 4x speed. No matter - I burnt it on one machine, then pulled the same DVD drive out of that machine, stuck it in my new WHS machine, and it's now installing without errors.
